Google is finally rolling out the ‘Lookup’ function in the phone app for select Pixel phones globally. The feature first went live exclusively for Pixel users in Japan alongside the March Feature drop. Then, in April, we spotted the function show up behind the scenes on Google Phone app beta version 127.0.620688474, hinting at an imminent release globally.
Now, alongside the June Pixel Feature Drop, Phone by Google is rolling out its reverse number ‘Lookup’ shortcut. This update streamlines the process of identifying unknown callers. In the Recents tab, simply tap to expand an incoming call from a number not saved in your contacts. You’ll now see a new ‘Lookup’ button alongside the existing options like ‘Add contact,’ ‘Messages,’ and ‘History.’
Tapping the ‘Lookup’ button launches a Google Search with the phone number, including the country code conveniently placed in parentheses. While the feature itself is a shortcut to a Google Search, it offers a significant quality-of-life improvement. Gone are the days of long-pressing to copy the number, opening the Google app, tapping the Search field, pasting the number, and hitting enter.
This update is rolling out via a server-side update, so you don’t necessarily need to be on the June Feature Drop or have the latest security patch to access it. The folks over at 9to5Google report that they got the update on version 132 of the app.
Another interesting discovery within the Phone Settings today is a shortcut to ‘Contact ringtones.’ This appears below the app’s other recent addition, ‘Audio Emoji.’ However, it’s important to note that the ‘Contact ringtones’ shortcut is not yet widely available.
