New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…

Original story (published on April 10, 2021) follows:

As many may already be aware, Xiaomi has commenced their stable MIUI 12.5 rollouts now that the promised time frame – Q2 2021 – is finally here. The first three lucky ones to bag the update include the Mi 10 Ultra, Mi 11, and the Mi 9 SE.

However, this does not mean that the MIUI 12.5 beta channel is going dead anytime soon. Beta development will run concurrently with stable rollouts at least until MIUI 13 development kickstarts.

This is pretty apparent from the fact that MIUI 12.5 beta has now received a version bump to 12.6. Not many details are available regarding it as of now but one can expect it to be just a minor update and will still go by the same name – MIUI 12.5.

Now, in light of hundreds of recent complaints about MIUI 12’s performance issues especially following its merger with Android 11, the MIUI R&D Head had promised that their main focus will be stability and fluidity this year.

From this, one can conclude that feature additions will grow scarce as MIUI devs prioritize optimization. However, as it stands, the devs just aren’t done with it yet.

The latest MIUI 12.5 China beta updates namely 21.3.21, 21.4.2, and 21.4.6 have brought along quite some new stuff which we have discussed below.

For starters, the MIUI 12.5 beta update 21.3.21 introduces an interface redesign for the Game Turbo app with some brand new touch controls. The older interface (top) is compared with the newer one (bottom) below:

This change is currently only available on the recently launched Mi 11 Pro/Ultra but should make it to other devices soon as well.

Additionally, you also get some cool new wallpapers with MIUI 12.5 beta update 21.4.2. These ‘Geometric Wallpapers’ may have been available since the advent of MIUI 12 but are now dynamic.

This means that they’ll adapt based on the device theme – light theme will turn the wallpaper into a lighter shade and vice versa. Hopefully, these wallpapers won’t lag the way other Super Wallpapers do.

Last but not the least, the menu that appears when holding down on a notification has been completely re-designed. This is combined with changes to the notifications in landscape mode that now appear translucent for a less intrusive experience.

You can try out all these changes with the latest Chinese beta builds if you have an unlocked bootloader. Alternatively, you can also install the Xiaomi.eu versions for the same.

However, if you are awaiting a stable MIUI 12.5 rollout, then you will be pleased to know that Xiaomi recently revealed a new update timeline for a bunch of eligible devices which you can check out from here.
