Original story (published on April 3) follows:

Xiaomi has a new Mi A2 Lite software update that is not the much-anticipated bug-fixing Android 10 firmware the company promised a while ago to arrive as part of the March patch.

For the uninitiated, the Mi A2 Lite Android 10 update first arrived about a month ago, but hardly a day later, reports of bricking devices following the update started flooding the interwebs, forcing Xiaomi to acknowledge the issue.

A couple of days later, the Mi A2 Lite Android 10 update was pulled in order to prevent more devices from getting affected. The company has also confirmed that a fix is in the works and asked affected users to visit a service center for assistance.

Although it was widely expected that the March security patch will bring an Android 10-based firmware to the Mi A2 Lite with bug fixes and performance improvements, Xiaomi has other ideas. In fact, we thought the update had been re-released, but it doesn’t seem like it.

As of this writing, the Mi A2 Lite Android 10 update is seemingly postponed now that the device is receiving a new software update that bumps the security patch to March 2020 but based on the older Android 9 Pie OS.

In the update notes, Xiaomi says this particular rollout is meant for those Mi A2 Lite units still on Android Pie. As for those who had already switched to the buggy Android 10, you are asked to stay tuned for future updates.

This is a pretty much familiar story in Xiaomi’s Android One family. Not long ago, the Mi A3 also went through a similar situation, where an older Pie-based update was pushed to devices that had not picked up the buggy Android 10 firmware.

The latest development casts a shadow on the availability of the Mi A2 Lite Android 10 update, but of course, it is always better to get it late without bugs than early with bugs everywhere.

Since the incoming OTA update will take time to hit all Mi A2 Lite units on Pie, we have the download link below for those who wish to install it manually.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
