Nokia 3.1 A on AT&T getting October security update

Nokia’s is a modern-day comeback story. The company used to be the king of the mobile industry in the 2000s, giving us iconic devices like the indestructible Nokia 3310 and the classy N-Series of the late 2000s. But a few questionable decisions left them behind once the smartphone era dawned.

The company struggled under Microsoft and the now-discontinued Windows Phone for several years before HMD Global came by and rescued the Nokia brand. Today, Nokia makes Android phones and also collaborates with carriers to make customized variants.

Nokia’s strength today is the clean, junk-free OS on their phones. Most of the Nokia phones are part of Android One program. It helps them to receive updates (even major one) quite fast compared to other OEMs.

However, carrier variants are once again the victim of the delayed updates. Unfortunately Nokia can not control the update flow on those models while the cellular providers often change the OS to include extra components. The AT&T branded Nokia 3.1 A is a part of this saga.

Nokia 3.1 A October Update

It is late November and many devices have already received the November patch. However, Nokia 3.1 A is now receiving October security update via AT&T.

In contrast, the non-carrier version of the Nokia 3.1 already has been updated to the November security update across the globe.

The AT&T model differs from the regular Nokia 3.1 in a few very subtle ways. While the Nokia 3.1 was launched in May 2018, the Nokia 3.1 A was unveiled in June 2019.

Unlike the unlocked variant, Nokia 3.1 A only supports single sim. Most significant difference, however, is Snapdragon 429 SoC on the Nokia 3.1 A compared to the MediaTek MT6750 inside Nokia 3.1. Apart from the hardware limitations, AT&T loves to restrict the OTA frequency too.

As you can see, the update is being rolled out to the TA1140 model. After the OTA, the new software version will be updated to 01N0_1_41G with baseband version 9_GENNS_PACK-1.193821.3.196919.2.

While the carrier unlocked Nokia 3.1 is scheduled to receive Android 10 update during Q2 of 2020, we can’t say anything about Nokia 3.1 A. AT&T is notorious for delaying updates, so the phone might stick with Android Pie forever. ?
