I’m a fan of Realme and what they’ve been able to achieve in the year they’ve been in the smartphone business. With only a handful of smartphones in the market, the Oppo subsidiary was able to capture 9% of the total Indian market share in Q2 2019, up from 1% in Q2 2018.

That’s no easy feat in such a competitive market space and to continue this excellent run, the company recently released two more smartphones – Realme 5 and 5 Pro.

Realme 5 Pro is the latest member in the growing list of Realme phones in India

These two have their major selling point in the quad-lens camera setup on the back, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

To keep consumers happy and glued to the brand, Realme has been superb with software updates, something that has always been a letdown for Android fans. Unlike the mother company Oppo, the sub-brand has been keen to roll out timely updates on a regular basis to its devices.

Monthly security updates have been plenty for owners of the company’s devices all the way from Realme 1 to the newest Realme 5, most of which, if not all, are already running August security patches as of this writing.

Realme 5 August security update

The company has also updated the devices that came with Android Oreo to Pie and even more impressive is that Realme has just confirmed that it will provide several new cool features to all existing Realme phones – some of which have very close ties with Android 10.

Dark mode

Dark mode is one of the major highlights of the new Android 10 OS that’s getting everyone crazy for its battery-saving promise. Well, his feature will be made available to all Realme phones, which could imply it will be part of the update to Android 10 for these devices.

Q. Is dark mode being planned? And which realme devices will receive it?

A. Yes, after the feature is completed. It will be released to the user via OTA for ALL realme devices.

Realme X

Gesture navigation

With Android 10, Google also introduced new gestures where users can swipe from either edge of the device to go back to the previous app/page.

Realme says this gesture will also find its way to ALL Realme phones via a future OTA update, which, once again, points to a possible Android 10 update for these devices.

Q. Will the new gesture navigation with the option to swipe from both sides come to realme devices? All realme devices?

A. Yes, this feature will reach ALL devices and will be included in future OTA.

Realme 5-like ColorOS UI

Its typical for a new device to come with some tweaks to the default UI and even introduce some new features while at it. This was the case with the arrival of Realme 5 and 5 Pro, which arrived with ColorOS 6.0.1 on top of Android Pie.

According to Realme, ALL Realme phones will also be updated with this new ColorOS look and features in a future OTA update.

Q. The realme 5 series introduced a new look for ColorOS. Will this updated design make it to other realme devices? Which?

A. Yes, eventually ALL realme devices will get updated.

Realme 3

Dismiss notifications by swiping left or right

Realme users have also been asking the company to tweak the ColorOS skin and include an option to dismiss notifications by swiping left or right. This is a cool feature if one doesn’t want to respond to notifications and feels bothered by their presence in the shade.

As it stands, a future OTA update will be pushed to ALL Realme phones to enable this functionality.

Q. Can notifications be dismissed by swiping left or right thanks to a future OTA? Will all devices get this feature?

A. Yes, after the feature is completed will be released to the user via OTA or all the realme devices.

Realme has also provided insights into other aspects of its phones, among them Alexa support, support (or lack of) for the file manager in split-screen mode, missing AR Emoji in Realme phones, and so on. You can check out all these via this link.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
