Looking back at the past, OxygenOS from OnePlus had a rocky start. They had to prepare it in a hurry after the separation from Cyanogen Inc. and the result was obvious. Owners of both OnePlus X and OnePlus 2 were bugged with numerous glitches.

OnePlus 2: The phone was stuck with Android Marshmallow and did not get Nougat update

You can find a similarity between Xiaomi and OnePlus in terms of versioning conventions. Both Chinese OEMs decided not to follow Google’s numbering pattern. The version number MIUI from Xiaomi is truly unrelated with underlying Android layer.

On other other hand, OnePlus made a distinct difference of ‘3’ (three): their Marshmallow (Android 6.x) based OxygenOS was tagged as 3.x, Nougat as 4.x and Oreo as 5.x. With the release of Android Pie, they finally skipped a few digits to make it inline with Google.

OnePlus shipped OxygenOS 9.5, an incremental update of Pie based in-house skin, with the OnePlus 7 lineup. Following the pattern, we guess the upcoming Android 10 (codename ‘Q’) update should be dubbed as OxygenOS 10 (patting myself on the back).

Well, what about the exact release date? Interestingly, some Google Support agents ‘deliberately’ disclosed the arrival of the stable Android 10 OTA for Pixel family as September 3. Now someone played the same trick with OnePlus Support!

Wait, what just happened? Not only the Support person confirmed the speculation about Android 10’s September 3 release date, but they also hinted that OnePlus would do the same with OxygenOS OTA unless anything went south!

Essential is holding this unique track record of releasing stable Android Pie update for Essential Phone on the same date as Pixel series. Allegedly OnePlus is racing to take the mantle from them. But hey, always take these claims with a pinch of salt!

Both OnePlus 7/7 Pro and OnePlus 6/6T are part of the Android Q public beta testing, so it’s pretty safe to assume that they will receive the stable OTA in newest-comes-first order. FYI, the OEM committed to update OnePlus 5/5T to Android 10 as well.

An Open Beta based on Android Q was hinted earlier by a OnePlus employee. Do you think the Shenzhen based company will release the stable update before any kind of pilot testing with the community? Comment below.

Update 1 (September 03)

OnePlus has pushed the first Open Beta that now opens the doors for OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro users to try the new OS. Complete story here.
