Multiple YouTube users are complaining that the classic ‘About’ and ‘Channels’ tabs that were previously available on each channel are missing or have disappeared for them, which is causing a lot of annoyance and frustration. This seems to be another one of those YouTube design changes that generates divided opinions (or a backlash).
‘About’ & ‘Channels’ tabs missing for several YouTube users
Previously, when accessing a channel, among the available tabs you could choose ‘About’ and ‘Channels’. While ‘About’ was a section that included all the details that the channel creator wanted to add, the ‘Channels’ section brought together all the channels of that same content creator (in case they had more than one).
However, for a few weeks now, several YouTube users have been reporting that both the ‘About’ and ‘Channels’ tabs are no longer available where they used to be. The main problem with this seems to be the loss of the ‘Channels’ tab, as it will now be more difficult to promote or discover secondary channels from your favorite creators.
There are creators who segment their content into different channels with videos dedicated to different topics, so having a section dedicated to showing all the channels related to their profile was quite useful to give them visibility and help their growth. On the other hand, the ‘About’ tab was used to include contact information, links to other social networks and brief descriptions of the channel, among other things.
Here’s what you need to know
There is good and bad news regarding the disappearance of the aforementioned sections. Starting with the good news, the ‘About’ tab is not completely missing, but it has been relocated. Now you have to tap/click on the ‘>’ symbol below the channel name (from the app and mobile site) or to the right (from the website) to access it. There you will see all the info that you could previously check in a separate tab.
However, the bad news is that, at least for now, the ‘Channels’ tab was not relocated but completely removed from YouTube, as there is no way to access it. Therefore, there will possibly be a negative impact on discovering secondary channels from your favorite creators.
Also, unlike other occasions where a browser extension or plugin usually quickly emerges that returns things to their place, there is still no one that returns the YouTube ‘About’ and ‘Channels’ tabs to where they were.
While the repositioning of the ‘About’ tab may take some getting used to, the complete removal of the ‘Channels’ tabs can become a real problem for the visibility of secondary channels. Let’s hope that the YouTube team receives user feedback on these changes and acts accordingly.
