The upcoming 2D side-scrolling Mario game, Super Mario Bros Wonder, has already been receiving numerous positive reviews. But recently revealed behind-the-scenes tidbits about the game are attracting fans’ attention. According to developers, Super Mario Bros Wonder was supposed to have a live commentary feature with a ‘tsundere’ mode.

The word tsundere is a Japanese term for a character development process that depicts a character with an initially harsh personality who gradually reveals a warmer, friendlier side over time. This characteristic was supposed to be implemented into an alleged in-game commentary.

What is the Tsundere flower in Super Mario Bros Wonder and why was it scrapped?

During the development phase, the team devised an idea for a new feature. They planned to implement a sports game-like live commentary system into the game. It was supposed to react to the actions of the players. But that’s not all. This feature was supposed to have a unique mode.

In a recent interview, the director and producer of the game claimed the live commentary feature was also supposed to have a ‘tsundere’ mode. In this mode, the commentator would have made snarky or sarcastic remarks about the player’s feats.

The feature was scrapped because it would have been hard to make it work, and it would have required a tremendous amount of work to implement properly. The developers spent six months developing the feature, but something about it just “didn’t feel right”.

However, the feature wasn’t completely rejected. Super Mario Bros Wonder introduced a flower character that would occasionally chime into the screen to give some remarks on the player’s performance.

The developers said there were also talks of giving this flower some tsundere dialogue, but ultimately it was also scrapped. The flowers come to the levels to make the game less lonely if the player is playing solo. But it is really unfortunate that it never got to have its tsundere glory.

What does the talking flower do in the game?

Although the live commentary didn’t made it to the game, a varient of it made in the shape of the talking flower, But what does it do? let’s see:

Adds engagement and feedback to the game:

The Talking Flowers are small, orange, or red flowers that talk to the player when approached, and their dialogue is fully voiced. They make jokes and sometimes offer gameplay hints, and they occasionally chime in throughout levels to make the game less lonely if you’re playing solo. This feature adds engagement and feedback to the game, making it more interactive and enjoyable for players.

Provides optional audio commentary:

Players have the option to turn the Talking Flowers’ dialogue on and off and can change the language they speak in. This means that players who prefer a more traditional-sounding Mario game can silence the flowers, while those who enjoy the added commentary can keep it on.

Offers a quality-of-life feature:

The Talking Flowers feature is a quality-of-life feature that makes the game more enjoyable for players. It livens up the gameplay experience and provides a unique touch to the game that sets it apart from other Mario games.
