Twitter is a well-known and frequently used social media network that has transformed the way people interact and share information online.

It has become a significant tool for individuals, organizations, and public figures to engage with their audiences, voice their opinions, and stay informed on a variety of issues.

The company also frequently introduces changes and adds new features to the platform with the aim of enhancing the user experience.

However, it appears that a recent modification to the DM settings is causing problems for some users.

Twitter DM frequency reduced, messages missing or not coming through

On July 14, Twitter introduced a new message setting to combat the influx of spam messages in DMs (Direct Messages).

Once enabled, messages from people one follows are directed to the primary inbox, while messages from verified users they don’t follow are routed to the message request inbox.

Notably, those who previously allowed message requests from anyone will be automatically transitioned to this new setting.

Currently, non-Blue users can choose to receive messages just from individuals they follow, message requests from Verified users, or from everyone.

Blue subscribers, on the other hand, can accept message requests only from Verified users and people they follow, people they follow, or from everyone.

However, after the recent change, multiple Twitter users (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10) are allegedly seeing a reduced frequency in the number of DMs they receive, despite intentionally keeping their DMs open at all times.

Others believe that messages are missing or not getting through like before. It has been claimed that Twitter quietly changed the settings, limiting messages for Blue users to only those from accounts they follow and verified users.

In addition to this, message requests for non-Blue users have been limited to only those from verified users. As a result, users are receiving fewer or even no DMs from folks they do not follow.

The recent modifications also impact individuals conducting business or relying on DMs for bookings, commissions, and other purposes.

I started to see little to no DMs: and I keep my DMs open at all times, on purpose. Twitter SILENTLY changed my (maybe everyone’s?) settings to only allow messages from only people I follow + verified users.

And to make matters worse, the settings keep reverting back to the new default, even when changed time and again. Some have even questioned the point of tweaking the settings without even providing a notification about it.

Potential workaround

An easy workaround is to return to the DM settings in the ‘Privacy and Safety’ menu under the ‘Settings and Privacy’ section and make the change once again. By doing so, you will be able to receive DMs from all accounts.

That said, the company should also better convey such changes to everyone, as not everyone will view the tweet announcing new features.
