New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on March 30, 2023) follows:

TIDAL, the high-fidelity music streaming service, has launched a new initiative called Live DJ session. This allows users to start a DJ session, then provides a link that can be sent to friends who can listen in.

This feature is similar to Spotify’s remote group session or Apple’s SharePlay except you don’t have to know who the listeners are.

As more people turn to music streaming as their primary way of consuming music, TIDAL is looking for ways to differentiate itself from the competition.

However, some TIDAL users are not fans of the new UI, and the ‘live DJ session’ feature (1,2,3).

According to user feedback, they are not interested in knowing what music a stranger or friend is currently listening to, and the ‘live’ icon on music streaming apps annoys them.

With various methods already available for discovering music based on personal preferences, such as AI radio, online radio stations, and public playlists, this additional feature does not seem to be in high demand.

However, some suggest that this feature may be useful for PC gamers who are engaged in other activities while listening to music. But this feature is only available on the mobile app, limiting its practicality.

There are also speculations that TIDAL intends to provide a social aspect to their service by enabling users to share their music preferences with others in the community, similar to Spotify.

I now have live session after update. What’s the point with that? For me it looks ridiculous and bummer it’s not possible to hide it.

I wan’t to understand the thought process behind this feature, but I struggle to come up with a reasonable user scenario that makes this feature worthwhile the investment and maintenance.

To make TIDAL pay attention, those impacted should provide ample feedback, particularly since TIDAL asserts that the feature is new and they haven’t yet decided to offer an option to disable it.

If the feedback is negative, developers may take action eventually as we have seen recently in the case of Discord’s ‘swipe left to reply’ feature.

We even have an example of a TIDAL user getting a response from support after a complaint regarding this feature:

We completely understand your concern. At this time, since this is a new release, we do not offer an option to disable the live session feature. However, we will be sure your request gets in the right hands. Your feedback helps us improve and we appreciate your thoughts!

Thus, more TIDAL users are urged to keep sending their thoughts on the matter via email and eventually might get an option to it turned off.

That said, we’ll keep tabs on the latest developments and update this story as and when something noteworthy comes up.

Update 1 (April 28, 2023)

06:20 pm (IST): The developers have listened to the user’s feedback and have given them a toggle to turn the ‘Live DJ session’ feature off (1,2).

It’s slowly being rolled out to everyone, so some of you might not have it right away.
