Threads has been designed to be a positive and creative space for expressing yourself with words, whether you are a creator or a casual poster.

The glimpse of upcoming features for Threads users provided by Adam Mosseri has created a buzz of excitement, considering the platform is still in its raw state and has immense potential.

These include a following feed, an edit button, and post search, all of which are expected to be rolled out in the coming days or weeks.

Threads users against ‘trending topics and hashtags’ implementation

Amid the anticipation, however, some users have expressed disappointment and concern over the omission of trending topics and hashtags from the list of upcoming updates.

On platforms like Twitter, these trends often attract significant attention, driving conversations and allowing users to explore a diverse range of content.

But one notable issue associated with trending topics is the phenomenon of hashtag hijacking.

This occurs when unrelated or irrelevant content manages to infiltrate popular hashtags, diverting discussions away from their intended purpose.

One such example can be seen in this tweet that will show up in multiple hashtags, including the trending #delhiflood yet the tweet has little to do with the floods:

In light of the issues observed on platforms like Twitter, several Threads users have expressed relief that trending topics and hashtags were not explicitly highlighted as upcoming features (1,2,3).

These users argue that the absence of these features in Threads may help maintain the integrity and relevance of conversations on the platform.

By avoiding the pitfalls associated with hashtag hijacking, Threads could potentially foster more meaningful discussions centered around users’ connections and interests.

However, not all Threads users are content with the omission of trending topics and hashtags (1,2,3).

Some argue that these features provide an avenue for discovering new content, connecting with like-minded individuals, and staying informed about current events.

Hashtags, in particular, allow users to categorize and search for specific topics of interest, making it easier to find relevant content and engage in discussions beyond their immediate network.

Threads got bland pretty quick tbh. There is no trending topics function nor is there any one feature that is super special that Twitter doesn’t have.

Isn’t trending topics the feature that made Twitter the source of real-time information? Why would that be bad to have on Threads? I’d like to see trending topics here as well.

‘Hashtags’ feature coming in future?

Instagram boss Adam Mosseri has acknowledged the discussions surrounding the absence of hashtags on Threads.

In a recent statement, he confirmed that the feature is indeed on the development roadmap but not among the imminent updates.

Mosseri’s response suggests that Instagram aims to introduce hashtags in a thoughtful and considered manner, taking into account the challenges associated with their implementation.
