Samsung is the leading smartphone vendor in the world for one major reason – it pumps volumes of smartphones into the market at different price points, with some even market-specific, meaning they never make it to other markets across the globe.

One such phone is the Samsung Galaxy M40. The device was unveiled in June 2019 as the most superior variant in a Galaxy M series that also consists of Samsung Galaxy M30, Galaxy M20, and Galaxy M10.

As I write this, the Galaxy M40 is receiving a new software update in India, one of the few markets that were lucky to get it. The update is arriving over the air as software version M405FDDU1ASH1 and weighs in at 366.60MB.

For this size, it’s obvious that Samsung Galaxy M40 users will receive more than just the latest August 2019 security update.

According to the changelog provided by Samsung, the update also improves the performance of the camera by adding a new QR code scanner to the camera app. This feature has in the past been pushed to Samsung Galaxy S10, Galaxy A70, and other Samsung phones via software updates.

Also receiving a new August security update is Samsung Galaxy J6 (aka Samsung Galaxy On6 in India). The update has also been spotted in the Indian market arriving as software version J600GDXU4BSH2 and weighs in at 182.74MB.

The OTA update not only installs the new Android security patch to the Galaxy J6 handsets, but it also fixes unnamed bugs, improves performance and enhances system-wide stability.

At the moment, there is still no word on when the Galaxy J6 models sold outside India will receive the latest August security update. Also, we don’t know when to expect the superior Galaxy J6+ to join the party, although the wait shouldn’t be long.

Both updates for Samsung Galaxy M40 and Galaxy J6 are available as of this writing. The two devices are receiving the new software over the air and typically, OTA updates may take several days before everyone receives the download notification. Stay calm as you wait for it to arrive.

Alternatively, you may try forcing the update via the software update option in the Settings menu of your phone, but there is no guarantee that you’ll find the download file ready for your device.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
