Samsung has this habit of pushing the latest security updates to it’s budget and midrange devices ahead of the flagships in the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series. As it stands, this isnt about to end, at least not this month.

It started with the Galaxy A50, where the device became the first not just from Samsung, but in the entire Android fraternity to receive the most up to date security patch dated October 2019.

The update came days ahead of the Google Pixels, which haven’t received their October patches as I write this. To continue this impressive streak, Samsung is now seeding a similar October 2019 security patch to the Galaxy A30.

The Galaxy A30 variant in question has model number SM-A305GT and so far, the firmware for those in Brazil and Peru is already live as version A305GTVJU2ASI3. It doesn’t bring more than the said October security patch, though.

Also receiving October 2019 security patches is the Android Go-based Galaxy J2 Core. The budget phone is getting the new update as version J260GDDU4ASI2 and unlike its counterpart, the firmware is based on Android Oreo.

As it stands, the new Galaxy J2 Core October update is available in Nepal, but more regions using model number SM-J260G should begin receiving this same update in the days to come.

While this is happening, those using the Nokia 3 from 2017 are also receiving a new software update. But unlike its Samsung counterparts, you have to settle for last month’s security patch, which is still not bad for a budget device that is two years old.

The Nokia 3 2017 software update weighs in at 90.4MB, so don’t expect more than what the changelog says. It must be remembered that the Nokia 3 2017 is one of the Nokia phones that will be receiving quarterly security updates through 2020, their third year of software support.

Unfortunately, the device will no longer receive Android OS upgrades. It came preinstalled with Android Nougat and already switched to Oreo and then Pie, the second and last major OS upgrade for most Android devices.

If you own any of the Galaxy A30, Galaxy J2 Core or Nokia 3 2017, watch out for an OTA update in the coming days. Usually, OTA updates may take days before all units receive the download notification.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
