Update 1 (March 29, 2024)
11:35 am (IST): We’re happy to announce that the Pixel 8 Pro not saving 5x zoom photos issue has been resolved. It will be available in the forthcoming Android update. So, keep an eye on the release notes for further details.
Original article (from March 11, 2024) follows:
Google Pixel 8 Pro owners enrolled in the Android 14 beta program are reporting a troubling camera bug after the recent beta 2 update where the phone is unable to save 50MP photos captured at 5x zoom or higher using the dedicated telephoto lens.
The problem seems directly linked to the latest Android 14 QPR3 beta 2 update. Users report (1,2,3,4,5) the camera functioning normally in other modes and for 50MP photos taken with zoom levels below 5x. However, attempts to capture 50MP images using the dedicated telephoto lens above 5x zoom result in the photos failing to save.
The bug has been filed multiple times in the Issue Tracker, and investigations are underway to determine the cause. It’s currently unknown whether a dedicated camera app update will resolve the problem or if users will need to wait for a subsequent Android 14 beta release.
This bug adds to the list of challenges faced by early Android beta adopters. Beta software, by nature, is unfinished and prone to unexpected issues as developers work to iron out kinks before a wider public release. This means you shouldn’t use it on your daily drivers, like this photographer found out the hard way.
While being unable to save 5x zoom photos from the telephoto lens in 50MP resolution is undoubtedly inconvenient for affected Pixel 8 Pro users, especially those who rely on the advanced telephoto capabilities, you can rest assured that an impending fix is likely in development. We will update this article once we have updates to share.
