Counterpoint Research recently revealed that 96% of all Nokia smartphones powered by Android OS have Android 9 Pie installed, either out of the box or via a software update.

The Finnish company, since stepping back into the smartphone industry via HMD Global, another Finnish company, in early 2017, has released close to 30 smartphones and only one of these devices is still stuck on Android Nougat, albeit partially, if you may.

The Nokia 2 was unveiled in late 2017 as an entry-level device with a focus on battery longevity and at this it’s great. Specs-wise, it isn’t a device you’d want to get if you are a slightly heavy user with streaming videos, browsing the web, light gaming, and multitasking in general.

The weaker hardware configuration is the reason the Nokia 2 still has an active team developing new updates based on Android Nougat at a time when Android 10 stable version is about to hit Nokia devices. Sure, you can grab an Oreo build for your 2, but here’s what HMD has to say about it:

Users should be aware that the performance of Nokia 2 on Oreo may not to be the same level as enjoyed with Nougat. In addition, some applications may not be supported.

Those who still went ahead and installed Android Oreo on their Nokia 2 sets despite the warning received the update to August 2019 security patch about two weeks ago. A couple of days ago, Verizon also pushed this same update to the Nokia 2 V.

As of this writing, those who stayed on Android Nougat are now receiving a similar update. The update is arriving as version E1M-068O-0-00WW-B02 and weighs 80.6MB, which is the typical size of a monthly security patch.

Being an OTA update, it may take some time before all Nokia 2 units on Android Nougat receive the download notification. You can either wait or grab the update via the link below and install it manually.

  • Device: Nokia 2
  • Size: 1.3GB
  • Channel: Stable
  • Version: E1M-068O-0-00WW-B02
  • Android: 7.1.1
    • Type: Recovery

Still, it’s great to see that Nokia is doing everything to keep users who chose to stay on the older Nougat OS secure with regular Android security patches. Thumbs up for that!

Nokia has already started rolling out the latest September 2019 security patches to several devices that include Nokia 8.1, Nokia 4.2 and Nokia 3.2 and more are expected to follow in the coming days.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
