Upgrading 2016’s OnePlus 3/3T from Marshmallow to Pie is not a matter of joke, but the OEM did it anyway. Essential is also doing a fantastic job by keeping their only phone up-to-date. Huawei secured a place in this high table by providing software updates from their legacy products, but there is a catch.
The aforementioned conversation is about Honor 8C, an entry level mid ranger released in October 2018. Abandoning the phone with its factory installed Android Oreo based EMUI 8.2 seems kinda strange, as the underlying chipset (Snapdragon 632) is perfectly capable of running Android Pie (and beyond).
Nonetheless, a massive new update is reportedly hitting some Honor 8C units. Despite having a size of 2.76 GB, there is no change in the Android version. Rather Huawei engineers bundled various software improvements along with June (not even July or August) security patches.
The full changelog is as follows:
Camera
– Improves video shooting in third-party apps.
– Optimizes Beauty mode for the front camera.
– Optimizes the quality of images taken in dim light.
– Optimizes the camera performance in wide aperture mode and improves photo quality.
Screen
– Optimizes touchscreen sensitivity.
Sound effect
– Improves sound effects in certain scenarios.
System
– Improves system performance and stability.
– Optimizes the data usage management function.
Network
– Optimizes mobile data network stability for better Internet browsing.
Apps
– Optimizes video playback for certain third party apps.
Communication
– Improves the stability of calls and signal in certain scenarios.
Security
– Integrates Google security patches released in June 2019 for improved system security.
It could be possible that Huawei/Honor will change their plan in future and provide further EMUI updates to this phone. Nonetheless, Honor 8C owners should be happy as the company still trying to improve the quality of the current software of the phone.
Talking about monthly security patches, yet another Honor phone is getting a such a new update. Honor Play, a gaming focused phone sporting Kirin 970 SoC, is now getting a new EMUI OTA (9.1.0.331) with August security patchset.
The company pushed the stable EMUI 9.1 update for Honor Play during the end of last month, which also brought July security patches. For an incremental OTA, the size (~4 GB) of the new build is a little too much, but guess Huawei is preparing the phone for upcoming Android Q (10) based EMUI 10.
