The Moto G series remains the shining star in the darkness that clouds Motorola’s smartphone business. Since its launch in 2013, the G line of devices continues to flourish in markets like the U.S. and Brazil where consumers have a limited variety of great budget phones to pick from.
This, however, hasn’t stopped Motorola from selling its appeal to the Indian buyer despite the competition that is Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, and Realme, the brainchild of Oppo. For some reason, not all devices in the Moto G series made it to India. However, the 2017 Moto G5s Plus did.
Having clocked two years since its August 2017 launch, the Moto G5s Plus is no longer receiving major Android OS updates owing to the fact that devices in the Moto G series receive only one major OS update. For the G5s Plus, this update brought Android 8.1 Oreo back in September 2018.
When it comes to security updates, devices in the Moto G series get them after 60 to 90 days and not on a monthly basis. The latest version that Motorola is preparing for the G5s Plus in the U.S. is dated August 1. The rollout hasn’t started just yet, but the changelog is live as seen below.
The story is the same with respect to the standard Moto G5s in the U.S. But as far as the Indian market is concerned, things aren’t really at par. Right now, the Indian variant of the G5s Plus is receiving an update to June 2019 security patch, which is quite unfortunate but understandable.
As noted earlier, the Moto G5s and G5s Plus have been around since August 2017 and as we speak, they are now out of their two-year software support window. Granted, those in India might still be lucky to receive another update that installs August security patches at some point in future.
In the U.S., though, the upcoming update to August 2019 security patches should be the final software upgrade the device ever gets from Motorola, but this is just a hunch.
Other Motorola devices also set to receive the latest August security updates are the standard Moto G7 Play, Moto G6, Moto G6 Play, Moto G5s, and Moto E5 Play, but once again, this is still for the U.S. market. You can catch more coverage here.
With June security updates, Moto G5s Plus users in India are much better off than Moto G5 Plus users. The device is currently on February 2019 security patches, which is probably the last it’ll ever get now that it’s over two years old.

Even though the Moto G5s Plus June update is live in India, the fact that its airborne means it will take some time before all units receive the download notification. To check if the update is ready for your handset, go to Settings > System > System updates.
