[Updated] MIUI native call recording: Here's how to get the feature on your Mi, Redmi, or Poco device

In a bid to differentiate themselves, Android phone makers often build so many features into their skins and stock apps on top of Android. Xiaomi for one, incorporates call recording into its MIUI-based dialer app.

Understandably, such a useful feature is important to many MIUI users. However, that has been changing slowly as Xiaomi moves from it’s in-house MIUI Dialer app to Google’s stock apps in some regions.

According to reports, Xiaomi devices sold in the global market from late 2019 have shipped with Google’s dialer app which does not have the call recording feature.

Following a lot of outcry from users of Xiaomi devices with the Google dialer and therefore without this feature, Xiaomi has asked it’s users to sit tight and wait for an update to the Google Dialer app that should enable call recording. More on that here.

Already, some Xiaomi devices have received updates to enable this feature and with the lack of any concrete timelines as to when global devices are set to get this native call recording, Xiaomi users are getting anxious. So how can you get this feature on your Xiaomi device?

According to the company, you need to wait for Google to roll out this feature to your device. If you cannot wait, well, unlock your bootloader and flash the Indian or Indonesian ROM for your device using Mi Flash Tool.

All new Xiaomi devices sold globally from late 2019 comes with Google apps pre-installed instead of its MIUI counterparts. For now, there is no call recording feature in Google Dialer, but it’s under testing in Android One devices. As suggested above, if this feature is important to you, you may unlock the bootloader and flash the Indian (IN) or Indonesian (ID) ROM variants via Mi Flash Tool.

Unlocking bootloaders and flashing ROMs that weren’t meant for your device in the first place sounds like something only a techie would want to do. However, for now that is the only viable way to get this feature on your Xiaomi device.

We shall continue to follow the rollout of this feature to more Xiaomi devices because currently, only Android One devices have this feature enabled.
