iPhone users running iOS 17 or later version are now reporting a vexing problem where the microphone or speaker functionality is broken or not properly working. This problem appears to persist across various iterations of the update, including versions 17.0.3, 17.0.2, and 17.0.1, suggesting that recent incremental updates haven’t resolved this issue.

Recently, some users reported lagging, freezing or frame rate dropping issues on their iPhone after iOS 17 update. And now, another bug is bothering several users. I’ve come across a plenty of reports on Reddit and Apple’s community forum which indicate that it’s a widespread issue.

iPhone microphone broken on iOS 17

Some describe instances where the speaker stops working during phone calls, creating a frustrating experience for those trying to communicate. On the flip side, others note that their voice is not audible to callers, indicating a potential microphone malfunction. This problem persists whether using the phone’s speaker, AirPods, car Bluetooth, or even switching to speakerphone. However, voice memos and FaceTime audio seem to work without any issues.

Restarting the iPhone proves ineffective in resolving this issue, leading users to seek alternative solutions. Fortunately, the glitch appears to be limited to the native Phone app or is somehow tied to the recent iOS software update, as calling via third-party apps does not reproduce the problem.

Not a long ago, some users reported a problem with the earpiece speaker where it rattles when users increase the volume beyond 80 percent. This could potentially be related to the present issue users are experiencing. However, nothing can be said as of yet as Apple hasn’t officially acknowledged the bug.

What you can do

In the absence of an official fix, some users have found success by using the third-party calling apps. Hence, you can also try this out a potential workaround. Moreover, if you don’t want to use another app for calling purpose, you can also try installing the iOS 17.1 beta update, which has reportedly addressed a recent iOS 17-related issue for some users. So, it’s possible that Apple has already sorted out this glitch in the beta.

As iPhone users contend with this troublesome bug, the hope remains that Apple will address and resolve it in the forthcoming updates. And ensure a seamless and trouble-free calling experience for all users.

That said, we will update this article to reflect the latest information as and when we come across any.
