Here’s the crux of the article in video form:

Concerns regarding missing custom text tones have emerged with the iOS 17 Release Candidate (RC) build. Some have even complained about the new default notification sound being too low.

With each new iOS update, Apple users eagerly anticipate the arrival of fresh features and improvements (1,2). iOS 17 has certainly lived up to these expectations by introducing new ringtones for calls and texts.

iOS 17 custom text tones missing in RC update

However, the recent iOS 17 RC update has taken a step back by removing the ability to set custom-imported ringtones as text tones (1,2,3,4).

You can check out a user’s report below showcasing the missing feature:

This change has left many users bewildered and disappointed. While some speculate that this might be an unintended bug in the RC build, it raises concerns about the future of customization in iOS.

I just updated to the iOS 17 RC and I’m noticing a new notification sound and I can’t seem to change it back to tri-tone and I don’t like the new notification sound

Before the update I had several custom text tones that I would use on emergency bypass for certain people who were close to me. After updating to iOS 17 seems Apple now removes it and places all of them in Ringtone, guess we can no longer assign custom text tones.

Moreover, RC builds are often regarded as the last stages of development. It is also anticipated that such builds are almost similar to the final stable versions.

This means that any problems or modifications found in the RC builds have higher chances of being present in the stable versions too.

It’s worth noting that users can still use the GarageBand method to export custom-made ringtones. However, they are unable to set them as their text tones.

New default notification sound too low

Another contentious issue is the perceived volume of the new default notification sound. Some users have reported that the sound is too low or quieter than they would prefer (1,2,3,4,5).

This has led to frustration, as users may miss important notifications if they do not hear the sound promptly.

Only problem is it’s way too quiet to the point you can barely hear it. At least make it louder.

The volume of notification sounds is a crucial aspect of a smartphone’s usability. Users rely on these sounds to stay informed about various vital alerts.

Therefore, iOS users have voiced their concerns and desires regarding these issues. Some have suggested that Apple should reintroduce the ability to set custom text tones.

I was wondering what that noise was coming from my desk. Not sure I like the new one versus the old one. Why can’t we please please change it to something of our choosing Apple!?

While iOS 17 continues to evolve, it is also essential for Apple to strike a balance between innovation and maintaining features that users value.

Ultimately, the success of iOS 17 will be measured by how well it addresses the needs and preferences of its diverse user base.
