The frustrating crashing issue plaguing your Google Photos experience when using the Magic Eraser feature on Pixel phones seems to be a thing of the past. But the road to resolution wasn’t exactly paved with rose petals, involving bizarre support suggestions and a lack of official communication.

For the past week, Pixel owners have been reporting widespread crashes whenever they attempted to erase unwanted elements from their photos using Magic Eraser. The issue suspiciously coincided with the rollout of the January 2024 Pixel update and a new version of the Google Photos app, leaving many to believe that a software glitch was the culprit.

Adding fuel to the frustration, some users who contacted Google support for assistance were met with bafflingly extreme suggestions. Resetting all app preferences and even factory resetting devices were reportedly the solutions proffered by some members of the support team. Needless to say, these drastic measures, typically meant for addressing widespread system issues, seemed absurdly overkill for a problem localized to a single app.

Thankfully, sanity seems to have prevailed, as a new Google Photos update (version 6.65.0.595576881) is now rolling out and appears to be the much-needed magic touch. Early reports from Pixel users confirm that the update effectively squashes the Magic Eraser crashing bug in Google Photos, allowing them to seamlessly remove unwanted photo elements once again. While Google hasn’t yet officially acknowledged the issue or the fix, these user confirmations leave little room for doubt.

So, if the Google Photos app has been crashing while using Magic Eraser on your Google Pixel phone, head straight to the Google Play Store and grab the latest update.
