In anticipation of a momentous year for Google hardware releases, a surprise listing for a new Wear OS smartwatch has emerged on the FCC database. However, 9to5Google says this device appears to be distinct from the highly anticipated Google Pixel Watch 3.

Prior reports have shed light on various aspects of the upcoming Pixel Watch 3, including the availability of two size options. Additionally, evidence suggests Google’s intention to implement Ultra-Wideband (UWB) connectivity for Watch Unlock, a feature absent from Bluetooth Low Energy (LE). A battery life improvement is also expected for the Watch 3.

The newly discovered FCC listing presents a curious anomaly. The instructions for locating the on-device FCC E-label precisely match the corresponding steps on a current Pixel Watch. This alignment strengthens the notion of a smartwatch rather than another device category.

Regulatory information, certification, and compliance marks can be found with the following steps from the Home screen: Settings > System > Regulatory Information.

The timing of the FCC listing further reinforces the unlikelihood of this being the Google Pixel Watch 3. With a projected fall launch for the Google Pixel Watch 3, its FCC certification wouldn’t typically appear before late summer. Furthermore, the absence of UWB connectivity on this device excludes it from being the Pixel Watch 3.

Given these factors, speculation swirls around the identity of this Wear OS device from Google. A remote possibility exists that it could be a mid-range offering akin to a “Pixel Watch 2a” positioned to coincide with the upcoming Pixel 8a launch. However, there haven’t been any leaks or reports hinting at the development of such a smartwatch.

Another intriguing detail is the apparent singular variant of this G4SKY watch, equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and LTE connectivity. The presence of LTE eliminates the possibility of an alternative Android-powered device, such as a Chromecast. Conversely, the lack of 5G support dis qualifies it from being the Pixel Tablet 2.

By piecing together the available information, it appears Google or Fitbit might be developing an alternative to the Pixel Watch. With Google I/O 2024 less than a month away, this event, already anticipated to unveil the Pixel 8a, could potentially shed more light on this new device.
