Update 1 (March 28, 2024)

05:13 pm (IST): As promised last month, Gemini is now rolling out to some lucky Google Messages beta testers. You’ll need to have RCS messaging enabled in order to use it.

If you’re one of the chosen few and have RCS turned on, look for a new ‘Gemini’ contact when you tap the “Start chat” button. Follow the on-screen prompts, and you’ll be chatting with Gemini in the familiar messaging interface. Just keep in mind that you can’t send voice messages yet, but you can share images.

Original article (from Feb 27, 2024) follows:

A couple of weeks ago, reports emerged that Google was working to bring Gemini support within the Google Messages app. Well, we can now confirm that indeed Google is bringing the power of its conversational AI directly to the Messages app. Starting this week, the feature is rolling out in beta, allowing users to interact with the AI chatbot for everything from drafting messages and brainstorming ideas to simply having engaging conversations.

This capability will initially be available on Google Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel 8, and the Pixel Fold. This includes Pixel devices in the A series. Samsung users aren’t being left out thanks to the recent bromance between Google and the Korean company. However, only owners of the Galaxy S22 series or newer, along with Galaxy Z Flip or Z Fold series, will gain access to Gemini within the Messages app.

The integration means Google Messages users won’t need a separate app to interact with Gemini on their Pixel devices, making the AI feel like just another contact in your messaging list. But do keep in mind that this feature will be rolling out gradually, so it’s likely that some people will get it ahead of others even if on the beta version.

While details on broader rollout timelines are yet to be announced, this development signals Google’s commitment to making Gemini a seamless and accessible part of our day-to-day mobile interactions.
