As expected, the Galaxy S24 series launched yesterday, boasting powerful specs, but also a new Galaxy AI suite of tools that seek to put these devices on the level of the Pixel 8 series in the field of AI. But not only that, but the company surprised by announcing the integration of Gemini Nano, the model developed by Google, in the Galaxy S24 series.

In case you don’t know, Gemini Nano is one of the models developed by Google for AI processing. It is intended for mobile devices, enabling advanced AI-powered features while maintaining low power consumption, unlike the more powerful Gemini Pro and Gemini Ultra. Until now, Gemini Nano was only present in the Pixel 8 Pro, since not even the vanilla Pixel 8 received it, but now the Galaxy S24 series can boast of it.

These are the Gemini Nano-powered AI features of the Galaxy S24 series

The Galaxy AI suite includes features and functions quite similar to those we have seen in the latest generation of Google mobile flagships. For example, the Dialer app now integrates a ‘Live Translate’ button that offers real-time two-way call translations, breaking down language barriers. Currently, the feature supports 13 languages, the translation is completely on-device and it is not necessary for the person you are calling to have a Galaxy 24 for it to work.

Samsung Translate now includes an ‘Interpreter mode’, which performs a similar function to the previous feature (breaking language barriers) but in in-person conversations instead of just phone calls. Additionally, the Samsung Notes app is now capable of organizing and summarizing your notes by itself, which somewhat draws on the capabilities of Google NotebookLM.

Another of the most surprising events was the announcement of a feature developed in conjunction with Google that will be available first on the Galaxy S24 series than on Pixel phones: Circle to Search. This feature allows you to do Lens-powered direct searches for anything you see on your screen using gestures such as drawing a circle, tapping, and others. According to Android expert Mishaal Rahman, Circle to Search is coming to the Pixel 8 series with the March Pixel Feature Drop.

Remember the Pixel Recorder ‘Summarize’ AI feature? Well, Samsung’s Voice Recorder app now integrates a functional equivalent, especially useful for recap meetings and similar situations. Pixel’s Magic Editor will also have an alternative on the Galaxy S24 series called ‘Photo Assist’, allowing you to ‘fill’ the missing area of an object or select subjects to move them and resize them, among other possibilities.

You can disable online AI processing; All AI features will be free until the end of 2025

There are a couple of key things you should know about the Galaxy S24 series AI features powered by Gemini Nano. First, the devices include an option that allows you to enable or disable online AI processing. Like the Pixel 8 series, not all AI features work completely offline, but require cloud assistance. However, Samsung offers you the option to disable online processing if you prefer, although this will limit the functionality of some features.

Second, the company points out that all Galaxy AI features will be free ‘until the end of 2025’, which indicates that, from that date, you will have to start paying a fee to continue using them. It is not yet known how much the fee will cost or what features you will lose if you do not pay it.

Finally, the Gemini Nano-powered Galaxy AI features will arrive on the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and Galaxy Tab S9 series during the first half of this year.

The integration of Gemini Nano in the S24 series for AI processing is another example of how much Google and Samsung have strengthened ties, which is benefiting users of Galaxy devices who will now even have the same 7 years of Android and security updates that the Pixel 8 series boasts.
