Emojis have become an integral part of our daily digital communication. They have evolved from being mere smiley faces to a wide range of expressive symbols that convey various emotions and reactions.

Discord users have the option to create their own custom emojis to use in their servers or personal chats. However, this feature went missing for some Nitro users .

Now, some Discord users are facing another issue where emoticons are getting converted into emojis (1,2,3,4,5,6).

A while back, Discord offered a feature to convert emoticons into emojis automatically and it was well-received by the community. It allowed users to express their emotions with ease.

However, an issue arises when the setting to toggle this feature is triggered to ‘ON’ without the user’s consent. This means that every time a user types an emoticon, it is automatically converted into an emoji.

For users who prefer character-based smileys, this can be a frustrating experience as it alters the intended message and makes the conversation visually unappealing.

Furthermore, there is no option to turn this feature off on the mobile version of Discord, making some users believe it’s a looming forced permanent change.

Rest assured that is not the case and you can turn this feature off on your Discord desktop app or the web version. But it seems to toggle itself back on.

Workaround

Fortunately, we have come across a workaround that might fix this issue for you. It involves using a backslash (\) followed by the smiley emoticon:

if you type a backslash \ in front of anything it disables it (commands, and emojis) and you can redisable it on the desktop/mobile browser discord (text & media –> convert)

That said, we’ll keep tabs on the latest developments regarding the issue and update the article accordingly.
