CopperheadOS is a privacy-centric, Google-less custom operating system that is based on Android. Interestingly, Copperhead Limited used to sell Nexus and Pixel smartphones preinstalled with the CopperOS.

And it has been a while since this OS came into the light. Back in February 2019, we have reported that differences between the CEO James Donaldson and the lead developer Daniel Micay, have crept up and ultimately, Daniel was fired.

It was expected that the CopperheadOS has breather it’s last but, there was a twist in the story. As the very next day we reported that the Copperhead Limited, is still selling the privacy-focused OS bundled with second-generation Google Pixel phones.

After our author Kingshuk De (@AndItsTito) posted the original story regarding the demise of the CopperOS, James Donaldson, CEO of Copperhead Limited, posted a surprising tweet stating that the CopperheadOS is not dead yet:

this information is equivocally false. CopperheadOS is still around and available for purchase. The other projects in this article are not hardened alternatives but simply AOSP with some bells and whistles.

But in a recent development, CopperheadOS is back in the business as a new Android 10 based CopperheadOS update is now available. This announcement was done on Reddit by the Founder of CopperheadOS:

Matter of fact, Pixel 2 and 2 XL users running CopperheadOS will get the Android 10 based update immediately.

As mentioned on the official website, one of the privacy features i.e. “Allow only while in use” App permission, the “Sensors Off” toggle, that you can find on Google’s Android 10 has been picked up from CopperheadOS.

Moreover, privacy-focused DuckDuckGo will be the default browser in this operating system. Other features include Dark Mode, Focus Mode, customizable and resizable windows, icons, and widgets, to customizable vibration intensity.

It is indeed, a surprising news for all the CopperheadOS users and soon the update will make its way to the users. Let us know in the comments below what are your thoughts on this development and have you ever used this privacy-centric OS or not?
