In 2023, no game came close to the level of critical success that Baldur’s Gate 3 achieved. The game offers incredible content and possibilities, some of which are still being discovered. For instance, in one of our recent playthroughs, we discovered that it’s possible not only to talk to one of the Dead Three but also potentially receive their blessing in Baldur’s Gate 3.

The Dead Three are taking calls in Baldur’s Gate 3

The story of Baldur’s Gate 3 is based on the popular fantasy tabletop game, Dungeons and Dragons, also known as DnD. Set in the expansive world of the tabletop game, the video game focuses on the city of Baldur’s Gate, which becomes the focal point of multiple conspiracies, tragedies, and a grand adventure.

At the heart of these stories are three gods: Bhaal, Myrkul, and Bane, collectively known as the Dead Three. These gods serve as the antagonists of the story, orchestrating their dark schemes through their chosen followers.

For the longest time, it was believed that these gods were passive elements of the story and could not be interacted with by the players. However, in a recent revelation, we found that the gods can indeed be contacted, using a method as dark and sadistic as they are.

How to contact one of the Dead Three in Baldur’s Gate 3?

(Spoilers for the story beyond this point)

The Dead Three have three chosen who heavily influence the story of Baldur’s Gate 3. These are Orin the Red (Bhaal), Gortash the Archduke (Bane), and the undead lord of Moonrise Tower, Ketheric Thorm (Myrkul).

These chosen are the direct conduits of their patron deities. When killed, their soul departs immediately and travels to their god’s domain to be eternally tormented, leaving behind an empty husk that was once their body.

If the player uses the ‘Speak with Dead’ spell on the bodies of these chosen, they can communicate with their patron gods. This occurs because the spell is intended to connect the user with the deceased spirit that previously resided inside the body. However, in this case, as the soul is currently being eternally tormented, it instead connects with the god that currently possesses the soul.

Unfortunately, it is currently only possible to connect with one of the Dead Three, Bane. This is due to the fact that at the time of death, Orin explodes into a pile of meat chunks, and Thorm was an undead who had undergone a painful cycle of death and resurrection before. The spell requires a complete body to work and cannot be cast on undead.

Gortash is the only one that…well, dies good.

What does Bane say?

After defeating Gortash inside his own fortress, players need to use the ‘disguise self’ spell to change their appearance. Following that, they can cast the ‘Speak with Dead’ spell on Gortash’s body.

Upon being contacted, the first thing Bane does is to announce himself. He is The Black Lord… classic villain stuff.

Players have the opportunity to ask Bane 5 questions. In these questions, players can seek crucial information such as the location of the Steelwatcher factory or inquire about Bane’s true plan with the tadpoles and his alliance with Bhaal and Myrkul.

If asked about the alliance, Bane reveals that he also had his own plans. He was indeed planning to make himself more powerful than his brothers, with the Mindflayer army.

According to him, mind flayer thralls don’t have souls, so killing them doesn’t count as murder. The affected individual’s soul also doesn’t travel to Myrkul after the tadpole hatches, thus undermining the concepts of murder and afterlife. In this way, Bane had planned to become the strongest of the Dead Gods.

After obtaining this information, players can use their remaining questions to acquire very interesting information.

How to become Bane’s chosen?

If the player asks The Black Lord what they need to do to receive his blessing, the Tyrant replies that they need to do what Gortash failed to do.

If the players simply acquire all the Netherstones, take control of the Netherbrain, and then amass their army of mind-controlled thralls, Bane will consider them as one of his chosen.

Now that’s a deadly deal!
