Although Google has been redoubling its marketing efforts to promote Pixel phones and devices, there is still a long way to go to be among the top brands in terms of sales, something confirmed by the latest Counterpoint market study in the US for October 2023.

Google Pixel phone sales still far behind Apple and Samsung in the US

A recent report revealed the top 5 best-selling smartphones in the US for October 2023, making it clear that Google Pixel devices remain ‘niche’ products, while devices from classic names like Apple and Samsung lead the list.

According to the source, the best-selling phone ranking is as follows:

  1. Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max: 24%
  2. Apple iPhone 15 Pro: 16%
  3. Apple iPhone 15: 13%
  4. Apple iPhone 14: 4%
  5. Samsung Galaxy A14 5G: 3%

The list makes it clear that Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the US market with an iron fist, especially Apple, which manages to place four high-end devices in the top positions, leaving fifth place for Samsung’s affordable Galaxy A14 5G.

Sadly, the report does not offer a broader ranking, showing only the 5 best-selling models in the US in October 2023, but it is unlikely that any of the top 10 positions will be occupied by a Google Pixel device.

What is Google doing to change the situation?

Google’s marketing has become more ‘aggressive’, especially highlighting its association with important public figures in the sports field in competitions as popular and massive as the NBA. However, the results of these efforts will be seen in the medium or long term, since the brand started with a large disadvantage compared to other big names.

It’s noteworthy that the Google Pixel devices were not born as smartphones for the mass public, which was evident when seeing their limited availability globally. It took several generations for the company to begin expanding the series to more key markets around the world, and the expansion process still continues today.

So, the condition of ‘limited range devices’ for a long time played against the Pixel brand’s ability to attract audiences. However, in recent years (especially after the launch of the Pixel 6 series), the company’s strategy seems to have changed to one that seeks to capture the mainstream audience.

The reality is that, today, Google Pixel devices cannot compete in sales against much more established brands such as Samsung or Apple in any market. How long will it take for us to see a Pixel phone among the best-selling ones? Only time will tell.
