Apex Legends broken SBMM (placed against higher tier or KD opponents) still troubles many

Apex Legends arrived in 2019 as an interesting free-to-play FPS battle royale. Currently the game is available for many platforms and consoles (current and previous generations), and even mobile devices (Android and iOS).

In Apex Legends, players have at their disposal a wide selection of warriors who have unique abilities that they must learn to master in order to be the last one standing.

However, the matchmaking system is one of the game’s improvable aspects according to the players. In the past we have already covered issues with the system such as very long wait times between matches.

Now, another issue with the Apex Legends matchmaking system (also known as SBMM) is causing unbalanced matches. It seems many players are placed against higher tier or KD opponents (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

The SBMM (Skill Based Matchmaking) is a system that seeks to offer the most balanced battles possible, taking into account the skill shown by all participants according to their match history.

Apex Legends SBMM system uses certain metrics from a player’s account (play time, Ranked Tier, Account Level, recent match stats, etc.) to match them with players of similar skill.

But the system is not working properly, according to multiple reports.

Apex Legends players’ main complaint about the SBMM system is that the game places you against opponents whose level and skill is far above your own.

This results in frustrating matches where less experienced players do not enjoy the battles. Also, players with some experience in the game face the same issue.

Seems like this new season broke the SBMM.. I’ve played five games in Silver 2 and it’s straight up all Diamond and Preds from last season. I normally get up to Platinum each season so you would think in Silver I could do alright, but I die by anyone that comes across me and their tracker typically shows like 20k kills. What is going on?

How does matchmaking work?

Out of 20 games I played solo I got 7 wins and then when I play with my friends we can’t even get a win in 20 games because everyone is diamond or higher in the final circle, is sbmm a thing, or do my friends and I just have to keep getting stomped by sweats until we get a win?

This situation is not exactly new as there have been similar reports since mid last year.
