Google has announced that it’s promoting Chrome 154 to the stable channel for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The build will be 154.0.8037.57 on Linux, with 154.0.8037.57 and 154.0.8037.58 heading to Windows and Mac. Android is getting 154.0.8037.57 through the Play Store over the next few days.
This is something you might want to look forward to installing because Google has packed in 108 security updates in it. This comes even after the wild month Chrome just had. The update is rolling out over the next few days and weeks, so don’t be surprised if it doesn’t hit your machine right away.
If you’ve been following the 153 cycle, this shouldn’t shock you. Google already pushed out a 42-fix update earlier in September, then dropped another desktop release with 16 more patches, including two big graphics bugs. Now with 154, the list just keeps growing.
Most of the nastier bugs are in the usual spots. There are memory overflows in Chrome’s graphics code and WebGL, plus some out-of-bounds writes in the GPU stack. You’ll also find memory bugs in Service Worker, fullscreen, and a few dialog and filter areas. Google is holding back the detailed writeups until more people get the patch. Nothing new there.
A few researchers got some cash for their trouble. STAR Labs scored $5,000 for a graphics overflow. Another GPU bug was worth $2,500. Most of the other payouts are still TBD or were found by Google’s own team.
Since the update is not widely rolling out, we don’t have any detailed release notes of what’s changing. Google just says to keep an eye on the Chrome and Chromium blogs for the bigger 154 changes. We already talked about some of this when 154 hit beta, like the Private Verification Tokens that should finally cut down on those annoying Incognito CAPTCHAs, and the fix for menus that disappear if you right-click or scroll the wrong way.
Since the update is not live yet on a wide scale, you probably won’t see it even if you try and manually checking for an update. We expect the update to begin a w
Google also gave a shoutout to the outside researchers who caught bugs before they hit stable. After all those 153 patches, this is the version bump a lot of folks have been waiting for.
