Firefox and NVIDIA explain official GeForce NOW support in a Reddit AMA

Mozilla and NVIDIA recently wrapped up an AMA session on Reddit. In it, they detailed GeForce NOW support for Firefox on Windows and answered further questions as well.

Firefox users on Windows can update the browser, open the GeForce NOW website, sign in, and stream games they already own (or can access through Steam, Epic Games Store, etc). Mozilla said more than 2,000 titles are available this way. No separate GeForce NOW app and no local game install are required.

The AMA on r/firefox focused on the GeForce NOW partnership. After months of joint work, it’s finally available in the browser. I’ve picked out some answers that I found important.

One response says that NVIDIA isn’t paying Mozilla for this. The main missing Firefox piece was keyboard lock, and there was also no agreed web standard. Firefox helped standardize the overall approach and also did extra work on it.

Responding to one comment which asked whether hardware acceleration was important, Firefox responded that streaming works without hardware acceleration as well, but it works better with acceleration available.

The broader goal is more choice. You can play in the native app or stream in Firefox without needing to install another client or download large files. Cloud does the heavy lifting. Some Firefox users in the AMA also reported capture problems with hardware acceleration and a fullscreen mouse issue in some games in the browser. Additionally, in response to a query about the monthly gameplay hour policy, the team said that there were no update plans on that for now.

1. Official support remains Windows-only. Mozilla hopes to make it official soon. However, unofficial support still exists for both those platforms, so it’ll still run.
2. For GeForce NOW Ultimate members, support up to 1440p and 120 FPS is available.
3. GeForce NOW already worked before the official announcement, but it wasn’t good enough to be called official.
