Waterfox has recently released version 6.7, known as Supernova, and this update brings a major visual overhaul. However, not everyone’s happy with it, and some people want the old customization options back. Waterfox has now directly responded to this feedback.

For those unaware, the latest update changes how users customize the browser’s appearance. The old “Look and Feel” section that offered a list of options for things like rounded corners, icon visibility, and spacing is no longer available in the main Settings menu. This fine-tuning has been simplified.

Instead, Waterfox now offers three browser styles.

  1. Nova is the new default for fresh installations.
  2. Proton delivers a modern UI design.
  3. Photon keeps the classic Waterfox appearance.

If you’re upgrading from the previous version, you’ll also see a one-time dialog that lets you keep your existing style or switch to another. We covered the entire update in more detail here. It brings native tree tabs as well.

As is common with UI design changes and option simplification, not everyone reacted positively to the update. On the Waterfox subreddit, you’ll find users asking for ways to restore the old options.

Waterfox design change.

In direct response, the developer of Waterfox issued a statement that clarifies the changes made.

Statement from Waterfox.

He stated that many people asked about the missing Look and Feel options in v6.7. However, the old base was starting to malfunction on some websites, and staying on it wouldn’t have worked long-term. He prioritized restoring the options gradually instead of delaying crucial security fixes for everyone.

At the moment, Square corners and the rest of the Photon style options are actively being worked on, and they’ll be re-implemented. Since Waterfox is a one-person operation, releases will involve tradeoffs. The post also discourages users from calling the developer ‘lazy’ because such tradeoffs in tech are common and unavoidable, especially for a volunteer project.

The post ended with the developer stating that personal attacks and repeated accusations will be removed, and that repeat offenders won’t have the ability to post anymore.
