Fresh stats reveal Edge shed a chunk of desktop browser share as Firefox gained traction

Data online suggests that the desktop version of Firefox has gained some market share over the last 3 months. However, the same data also claims that Microsoft Edge lost market share.

According to Statcounter, Microsoft Edge went from 12.75% (its peak in 2026) to 11.14% (in July). While it looked like growth had pretty much flatlined for Firefox, the share actually picked up in June and July. From 3.79% in May, it grew to 6.43% in July 2026.

However, these numbers are from Statcounter alone. The tool collects browser data using a JavaScript tracking code installed on millions of “member” websites. Whenever a user visits any of these pages, the code sends the user’s info (including the browser used) back to Statcounter’s servers. Since Statcounter essentially uses a tracking script to measure users, Adblockers can easily flag it, theoretically resulting in some inaccurate reporting.

Since it heavily relies on this system, the data isn’t always reliable. It’s not recommended to take these numbers at face value. In fact, when Firefox’s market share dropped from 4.21% in April to 3.79% in May, many posts online claimed that the browser was “losing millions of users at an alarming rate.” We explained how that may not be the case here.

Either way, things are looking up for Firefox. According to the same tool, Firefox allegedly overtook Safari in browser share, implying that the number of people using Firefox is actually going up.

Despite that, there’s nothing alarming going on for Edge’s market share either. It’s still comfortably in second place and remains ahead of Firefox.

Assuming the tool is somewhat accurate, the increase in the number of users could be from re-ignited interest due to the Nova redesign, or interesting features such as tools that let you know which tabs are slowing you down. Mozilla is also following its 2026 timeline properly, and the iOS beta of Firefox recently got an ad-blocker as well (more on that here).

On the other hand, the Microsoft Edge situation is unclear. A lot of people dislike how Microsoft shoe-horns Copilot and AI into everything, while also desperately trying to convince users to switch with absurd reasons.
