Brave now says Android extension support is "TBD" after previously saying it wasn't planned

Not many browsers on Android support extensions. If they’re important to you, then the choices are limited: Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Kiwi Browser, and other less-known/niche browsers. Brave doesn’t support extensions on Android at the time of writing either. However, that could change soon.

When asked about support for extensions on Android recently, the official Brave account replied with “TBD” on X. This indicates a change from their stance a few years ago.

Earlier, Brave said that there’s “no work currently planned to support extensions on Android.” The company emphasized that it’s difficult to add extensions because it must be constantly updated multiple times every month.

Brave already knows how to add extensions, so there isn’t exactly a “technical” limitation here. However, it requires a lot of time and work to keep extensions secure and updated. This was the explanation the company offered back in 2024.

Since Brave has 2/3 releases every month, and each release comes with a new Chromium version, updating the code multiple times and testing it out is likely a tedious process. Microsoft can afford to do this, since the Edge team has thousands of employees. To make matters harder, Microsoft doesn’t make the Edgium code open-source, so Brave can’t rely on that either.

At the time, Brave had the capability to add extensions, but there wasn’t enough manpower to do it. But considering the “TBD” response we got recently, Brave might be able to do it soon. Handling the consistent management, testing, and potential code changes every month isn’t “easy,” so it could still be a while away. Either way, that’s an improvement from “not currently planned.”
