The web is flooding with AI content, and DuckDuckGo knows its search engine is caught in the crossfire.
In a recent Reddit discussion where frustrated users called out the surge of low-quality sites, a DuckDuckGo staff member admitted that keeping search results clean has turned into an exhausting game of “whack-a-mole.” A site can be flagged and removed from the search index, only for several fresh AI-generated domains to take its place immediately.
“Personally, I feel the exact same way. The internet is getting flooded with AI spam, so returning good, relevant search results is becoming more like a game of whack-a-mole.”
DuckDuckGo says its core goal remains delivering relevant, helpful results, but filtering out synthetic content at scale is a massive technical hurdle. To help tackle the problem right now, the company is asking users to manually report AI-generated pages when they spot them.
You can flag an unhelpful page directly from the search results page by clicking the three-dot menu next to the URL, selecting Share Feedback about this site, and choosing AI generated. While DuckDuckGo acknowledges that reporting pages manually is far from a permanent fix, user feedback directly aids their effort to refine recognition algorithms.
“I know it’s not a solution right now, but we’re working on one,” the employee added, confirming the search engine is developing better systems to recognize and filter AI-generated websites automatically.
The search privacy brand has been steadily adjusting its product lineup to give users more control over their browsing experience, recently rolling out a browser AI toggle redesign alongside a built-in ad blocker.
Building automated systems that reliably distinguish human writing from machine-generated fluff without accidentally censoring legitimate sites is no easy task. For now, reporting AI spam gives DuckDuckGo the data points it needs to train better filters. If you are tired of sifting through synthetic search results, taking a second to flag those pages might just help restore some sanity to your search feed.
