Google Chrome already has built-in text-to-speech and search by voice features. Iterating over them, a new AI-powered “Voice typing” feature is currently under testing on Chrome Canary.

Information about the feature was spotted by @Leopeva64 and was shared through a post on X. You can view the relevant video and images below.

I’ve tried checking for this feature on Chrome Canary, but right-clicking in the text field (to enter text) gives me the same old options (like Emoji); the voice dictation feature is presently unavailable. It’ll probably take a while before it reaches all testing versions of Chrome.

Chrome Canary.

Notably, the video demos from the original source are from a Windows system, and the feature is likely not present for now on macOS.

Last month, the same source mentioned above posted about a “Start dictation” option in the menu, after right-clicking. It was assumed that the feature would be similar to Copilot dictation, where you can give voice commands.

Old Leopeva tweet.

This same option has now been renamed from “Start dictation” to “Voice typing.” A pop-up appears, which says “Turn your spoken thoughts into polished text…”

Pop-up.

It has two stages: Initialize & Finalize. The feature will make use of AI to fill in text fields with cleaned-up text, instead of just converting speech to text directly.

While the option exists, the feature itself still doesn’t work. Considering it’s still non-functional in Chrome Canary, it’ll take a while before it makes it to the stable version.

Dictation improvement isn’t the only upcoming AI feature. Google is also testing an “Ask AI Mode” for Gemini in Chrome, which is slated for release shortly. We covered that here.

In other Chrome news, there’s a built-in summarize button for PDFs in the latest beta. More on that here.
