Microsoft will finally add native Google Account sign-in to Edge

Microsoft Edge will soon let users sign in directly with a Google account. This change eliminates a long-standing annoyance that forced people to use a Microsoft Account for browser profiles and syncing.

Currently, Edge requires a Microsoft Account to sign in to a profile. This adds friction, and to those who don’t have a Microsoft Account, they are forced to create one just to sign in to Edge.

Many features, such as bookmark sync, password management, history, and others, are easily accessible or functionally better when tied to an account. If someone uses Google services primarily, this extra step is inconvenient, leading to a lot of people sticking with Google Chrome as a result.

Thankfully, according to an update in the Microsoft 365 roadmap with ID 565860 (first spotted by the folks at Windows Report), Microsoft is planning to add direct Google account sign-in.

Users can find the option in the Profile menu, and also on the Edge sign-in screen. Google Account log-in is now present alongside Microsoft Account. It’s expected to arrive in July 2026 and is currently under development.

The feature is available in Edge Canary. Do note that Canary is an unstable version of Edge that’s for testing, and isn’t recommended for daily use. You have to specifically enable the flags depicted in the image below to turn it on.

Sure enough, clicking on the Profile icon does show me an option to sign in with Google now, instead of just the Microsoft account.

So, people can easily sync their browser data using a Google account now. One simple login gives access to all Google services. It makes importing data from Chrome and shifting to Edge much easier; earlier workarounds were clumsier.

On the other hand, Google Chrome still ties main profile sign-ins to Google accounts. There’s no planned option to sign in from a Microsoft account on Chrome, and it’s unlikely for that to happen.

This approach from Microsoft is a lot more open than before, since it’s giving users more choice. There are people who like the features of Edge but don’t want to use a Microsoft account. For them, this is a nice change.
