Firefox Nightly users now have access to more New Tab customization options and expanded video interactions after a recent update.

These changes were described in an official blog post about Firefox Nightly from Mozilla, in “Issue 204.”

The latest Nightly build introduces several improvements. It finally gives users better control over the New Tab page; developers have added a preference that lets users hide the Firefox logo without disrupting the page layout. A lot of people disliked the logo placement and size, and have resorted to using custom CSS tweaks, as we previously covered here. You can just turn the logo off directly now.

Another notable fix is about video handling. Firefox now detects video overlays better, allowing the context menu to appear on more websites, such as Instagram Reels. This feature has been enabled for Nightly version 153 and is planned for the stable Firefox 153 release. However, the release of v153 could take a while, since v152 has just begun rolling out today (more on that here).

I’ve checked for this change myself on the Nightly build. After right-clicking on the reel, I’ve observed the context menu showing up with more controls for video.

For those unaware, Nightly is Mozilla’s experimental version of Firefox. It receives new features and fixes first, allowing early testing before they reach the main browser. However, it’s only directed at developers/testers and people who want the latest changes but are comfortable with a far more unstable experience.

These changes have been tracked through Bugzilla (Mozilla’s public bug tracker). You can find the main list of fixed bugs below:

  1. Bug 2041708 adds a preference called “logowordmark.alwaysVisible” to hide the New Tab logo. Previously, users faced layout issues if they removed it via custom CSS.
  2. Bug 2041819 enables video overlay detection for context menus. It makes actions like play/pause or Picture-in-Picture easier to access.

  3. Bug 2015559 is a security measure. (executeScript and insertCSS are now restricted from moz-extension pages)
  4. Bug 2014751 improves DevTools support for a specific modern CSS function. This is a change for developers.
