Following a price bump for new subscribers earlier this year, existing US YouTube Premium users saw their bills officially jump on June 8. Individual plans hit $15.99/mo, Student plans bumped to $8.99/mo, and Family plans skyrocketed to an eye-watering $26.99/mo. Just days later on June 11, German subscribers felt the squeeze too, with standard plans climbing to €14.99 and the stripped-down Premium Lite seeing a massive 33% hike.

The official reason provided by Google? To “continue to improve Premium and support the creators and artists you watch.” But as I’ve monitored the community fallout over the past few weeks, it’s glaringly obvious that users are actively seeking an exit strategy rather than opening their wallets wider.

Many are choosing to bypass Google entirely, arguing that if you genuinely want to support creators, you should do it directly. Some users are pivoting their subscription budgets directly to Patreon, Nebula, Dropout TV, and Critical Role. Meanwhile, the tech-savvy crowd is sharing a laundry list of workarounds to dodge the ads, including sideloading ReVanced, setting VPNs to Albania, or configuring uBlock Origin Lite.

But in the middle of this chaotic exodus, Brave browser just pulled off an absolute marketing masterstroke.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the official Brave account posted a brilliant, simplistic meme mocking the entire situation. It depicts a lone stick figure screaming, “YouTube Premium’s price is going up!” at a group of Brave users. One Brave user casually extends a thumbs-up to acknowledge the yelling man, and they immediately go back to minding their own business. The caption is a brutal two-worder: “Not our problem.”

As someone who covers tech workarounds and software updates daily, I have to tip my hat to this strategy. ReVanced is fantastic, adblockers are great but have their limits, and VPN routing works, but they require technical legwork and constant updates to avoid Google’s anti-adblock scripts. Brave is capitalizing on the simplest truth in the browser war: convenience is king.

You don’t need to tweak third-party extensions, worry about malware, or route your traffic through Eastern Europe. You simply install the browser, open YouTube, and enjoy the built-in ad-blocking capabilities right out of the box.

At a time when digital subscription fatigue is at an all-time high, Brave isn’t just selling a browser; they are selling peace of mind. And based on the current sentiment among frustrated YouTube viewers, it’s a pitch that’s landing perfectly.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
