Update 12/05/2026 – 06:01 pm (IST): It looks like some users are getting the restriction lifted from their accounts. According to several users in the comments on a couple of Reddit threads, they can once again access and comment in groups. Facebook, for its part, has not yet revealed why this happened.

Update 07/05/2026 – 06:01 pm (IST): Within the last few hours, a significant number of affected users have reported that their Group restrictions were abruptly lifted. While Meta has still not issued a formal statement, the consensus among community members is that a manual app update or a full reinstall may trigger the fix.

However, the situation remains inconsistent, with some users reporting new restrictions extending into early August. Additionally, there are claims that Meta is actively removing posts related to this bug in official admin-focused groups.

Original article published on May 1, 2026, follows:

An unexplained bug is locking thousands of Facebook users out of Groups and handing out massive three-month restrictions.

Seeing the timeline of reports, it seems that the issue started impacting many in the last 24 hours. The app is serving users notifications stating they are banned from posting or joining any groups until July 28 or July 29.

After reading through dozens of comments across several r/facebook threads, it is pretty clear this is a widespread system error rather than targeted moderation. People are understandably confused because their account health pages show zero violations.

Even worse, when affected users reach out to customer service, the AI and human support agents claim their accounts are in perfectly good standing.

But the front end of the app tells a completely different story. Many say the system has entirely scrubbed their past content from the groups they participate in. If they check from an alternate account, their previous posts and comments are completely invisible.

This seems to tie in with the issue we had reported yesterday, where Facebook Groups users said their feeds were blank. More on that here

A lot of folks rely on these groups for local marketplaces, tech support, or neighborhood updates. Getting slapped with a random 90-day ban without cause is quite frustrating, to say the least.

That said, at least one user has been jumping in threads with a potential workaround. If you try to force a post through, the app might prompt you to verify your identity. According to the user, completing a selfie video for ID verification instantly lifts the restriction.

But no one else seems to have confirmed any success with the workaround. In fact, some commenters say they won’t give Facebook their ID.

Those who use the platform for group moderation are essentially flying blind right now. Some group admins and members are completely unable to load their own community pages. They just see a generic error screen.

Despite the issue popping up several hours ago, Meta hasn’t yet said a word. Facebook support reps are reportedly telling paying Meta verified subscribers to just shake their phones and report it as a technical problem.
