Over the years, the narrative surrounding Google Pixel displays has shifted from serviceable to industry-leading. With the introduction of the Actua branding, Google signaled it was finally serious about screen quality. Now, a new report suggests the upcoming Pixel 11 series is set to take an even bigger leap, potentially securing a display technology crown that usually belongs to Apple or Samsung’s own flagships.
According to ETNews, Samsung Display is preparing its next-generation M16 OLED panels, and surprisingly, the Google Pixel 11 series is expected to be the first to feature them. This would put Google ahead of the iPhone 18 Pro models and even Samsung’s own Galaxy S series in the race to adopt the latest panel technology.
A rare hardware “first” for Google
What makes this rumor especially notable is that the companies Google would be leapfrogging. The Galaxy S26 series is still said to use M14 panels, meaning Samsung may not reserve M16 for its own Galaxy lineup until the Galaxy S27 generation. If true, that gives Pixel 11 a rare bragging right on paper: getting Samsung’s latest flagship display tech before Samsung’s flagship phone does.
Meanwhile, because Google has shifted its launch window to August, the Pixel 11 will likely hit shelves at least a month before the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, effectively making it the debut platform for the M16 display.
While the specific technical improvements of the M16 panel remain under wraps, these generational jumps usually bring significant gains in peak brightness, power efficiency, and overall color accuracy. For a series that has already been praised for its display performance recently, this is a massive win.
More than just a pretty screen
This display news is just one piece of a much larger hardware puzzle for the Pixel 11 family. We’ve already seen leaked renders of the Pixel 11 showing a familiar but refined design that returns to the footprint of the Pixel 9 while keeping Qi2 support and trimming the bezels. The Pixel 11 Pro is also expected to sport a more uniform glass camera bar, moving away from the metal-heavy visors of previous years.
Under the hood, the M16 OLED will be paired with the Tensor G6, which is rumored to be a total architectural shift built on TSMC’s 2nm process. Most importantly for those of us tired of signal drops, the Pixel 11 is expected to ditch Samsung modems in favor of the MediaTek M90, promising much better efficiency and connectivity.
The ultimate privacy machine?
Beyond the visuals and the raw power, Google is also leaning heavily into its “secure by default” mantra. For instance, the Pixel 11 is slated to receive its biggest security upgrade in five years with the introduction of the Titan M3 coprocessor (codenamed “Epic”).
It’s a fascinating pivot. For a long time, Pixels were the “smart” phones with okay hardware. If these reports hold true, the Pixel 11 might arrive this August as a hardware powerhouse that actually beats the iPhone and Galaxy at their own display game, all while doubling down on the privacy features that have made the line a favorite for enthusiasts.
