Update 18/03/26 – 04:26 pm (IST): Character AI’s swipe metering now appears to be rolling out to some free users. A screenshot shared by a user shows a prompt saying they’ve used up all of their daily Swipes, with the app offering more in exchange for Charms and pushing c.ai+ for unlimited Swipes.

The change is already drawing fresh backlash on Reddit, where users claim the cap applies across chats instead of per bot and argue that swiping is too core to the chat experience to be restricted. That said, the exact limit still seems unclear for now, as users in follow-up discussions said the widely repeated “10 swipes” figure has not been confirmed.

Original article published on March 11, 2026, follows:

Character AI has been slowly rolling out ads to free users for months. Mid-chat ads were first spotted in October last year, and by February, a wider rollout was confirmed. Now the platform has something new to announce, and it’s not good news for free users.

In an official post on its Discord server, Character AI confirmed it’s introducing usage limits on several core features “in the coming weeks.” Swipes, Go-ons (the continue/fast forward button), and Memos (playbacks) will all be capped for free users.

These aren’t obscure features. Swipes let users regenerate a bot’s response, and go-ons prompt the bot to keep going mid-conversation. For anyone doing long-form roleplay on the platform, both are about as essential as it gets.

The company says the metering is about managing infrastructure costs and frames ads as necessary to keep the platform free. c.ai+ subscribers won’t face these limits. Free users can use Charms, the platform’s in-app currency, to continue after hitting a cap, but it’s not clear how many Charms a user can realistically earn before running out.

As expected, users aren’t holding back in their reactions to the announcement. A post titled “You have to be joking” hit nearly 2,000 upvotes, with a top comment saying the move “screams that they’re struggling to keep C.AI profitable.”

Another thread crossed 2,400 upvotes, with users pointing out that swipes and go-ons have been standard free features since the beginning. Some are already comparing the situation to Chai, another AI chat app that recently blocked off free access to users in several regions.

There were a couple of positives buried in the announcement. Lorebook, which lets users set persistent context for their worlds and characters, and Memory, which personalizes chats using past conversations, are both in active testing with select beta users. The community has been asking for both for a while.

This comes shortly after a UI change that already frustrated users, and the steady drip of free-tier restrictions is pushing more people to consider alternatives. Whether Lorebook and Memory will be enough to win back goodwill is another story.
