Update 27/02/26 – 09:15 am (IST): Character.AI has now addressed the mid-chat ad backlash more directly via an announcement on Discord. A screenshot of that was shared in a thread titled, “GOODBYE C.AI” on r/CharacterAI, saying ads on the free tier help fund the cost of running its AI systems.

The message notes that users can avoid “banners and pop-up ads” by subscribing to C.AI+, while free users can use “Charms” for ad-free passes, and it also asks users to report any offensive or inappropriate ads using the ad feedback icon.

Update 26/02/26 – 11:40 am (IST): Turns out, what looked like a wider rollout might actually be a bug. A post on r/CharacterAI points to a Character AI Discord mod, Kappa Mikey, confirming that the team is already aware of the mid-chat ad issue. One theory doing the rounds is that the recently added banner ads may have accidentally triggered more intrusive placements inside active chats.

Original article published on February 26, 2026, follows:

If you have been using Character AI lately and suddenly found an ad staring at you in the middle of a conversation, you are not alone. Reports of ads showing up while actively chatting are blowing up across r/CharacterAI today, and going by how widespread the complaints are, this looks less like a bug and more like a broader rollout.

Back in October last year, we first reported that some Character AI users were seeing ads pop up mid-chat. At the time, it seemed like a limited test. Now, just a few hours into today, an unusually large number of users are reporting the same thing simultaneously, which strongly points to the mid-conversation ads being pushed out to a much wider audience.

One big thread discussing this is titled “Guys this finally happened!!” by u/potatto-william, which already has hundreds of upvotes and a flood of comments from users confirming they are seeing ads appear right in the middle of typing.

One commenter noted the mods are replying to other posts but going completely silent on this one, which is not sitting well with people.

Another thread simply asks, “There are ads MID CONVERSATION now?” and has 90+ upvotes. A separate post from just a few hours ago titled “ADS IN THE MIDDLE OF CHATS?????” hit 115 upvotes fast. There are many more posts piling up by the hour. So it’s safe to say that users are not happy.

The bigger frustration, beyond the interruption itself, is that some users are reporting the mid-chat ad wipes out whatever they had typed before hitting send. For a platform built around immersive roleplay and long-form AI conversations, that is a particularly bad look.

Character AI already had ads when opening or switching characters, and charges $9.99 a month for its C.AI+ subscription to go ad-free. Some users in the threads are pointing out that if pricing was more accessible, more people would just pay for the subscription rather than dealing with this. Others are calling the mid-chat placement the line they are not willing to cross.

Whether this is a complete rollout or still being staged across different regions and devices is not fully clear yet. We will need to wait and see how this settles once more users get to test it over the next few hours. But given how fast the reports are stacking up, Character AI may want to say something soon before the backlash gets louder.
