A few days back, I reported how Grok Imagine’s 10-second video generation capabilities began rolling out widely after a long wait. At the time, I tested and confirmed the feature was working perfectly. As a Premium subscriber on X, I managed to generate videos without any issues.
But here’s the twist. After xAI’s official announcement today regarding Grok Imagine 1.0 and its upgraded capabilities, the company has locked these new features behind the SuperGrok subscription.
I was testing it again and ran straight into the SuperGrok upgrade screen when tapping on the 10-second video button. Multiple users have also confirmed this now. If you want to generate 10-second videos or create content in crisp 720p resolution, you’ll need to fork out $30 per month for SuperGrok.

This is a bit of a rug pull for Premium users who were already testing the longer duration option. The timing stings because the new model brings some genuinely impressive upgrades. xAI says Grok Imagine 1.0 offers better audio quality with emotional and expressive character voices, plus music that syncs to scenes. The platform has been generating serious volume too — 1.245 billion videos in the last 30 days alone.
Multiple X users voiced frustration about this change. One user pointed out that regular Premium members had access to 10-second videos before this update, only to have it yanked away. That’s not a great look when you’re asking people to pay extra for something they already had (at least briefly).
SuperGrok isn’t exactly cheap either. At $30 monthly, it’s a standalone AI subscription separate from X Premium+. You get increased access to Grok 4, priority voice features, and the Imagine model with these newer capabilities. Still, the sudden shift leaves Premium users with just the basic 6-second, 480p video generation that was available before.
There’s another catch that SuperGrok users are already complaining about. The 720p and 10-second videos eat through your daily quota way faster than the shorter, lower-res clips. Some report hitting limits around just 10 videos per day in 720p, compared to nearly 200 at 480p. Failed generations still count against your quota too, which adds insult to injury.
xAI says the Grok Imagine API now tops Artificial Analysis benchmarks, showing the tech behind the model is solid. Whether that justifies another subscription on top of X Premium is up to you.
