Lately, the Roblox community just can’t seem to catch a break. In the past week alone, we’ve dealt with problems involving 2SV, avatar scanning, and now there’s growing concern among players that their beloved R6 avatar could be on its way out.

R6 is a classic, blocky Roblox avatar style with only 6 joints. Meanwhile, the R15 style that went live roughly a decade ago has 15 joints and is the default style. Still, many people prefer the older R6 avatar for the nostalgia factor.

Recently, there were official posts from Roblox which described a move to a ‘Single avatar system.’ Players on Reddit and X are alarmed about the removal of R6, with intense reactions.

An official video on X from the CEO of Roblox explicitly hints at a unified avatar system.

Currently, there are ongoing investments in dynamic heads, facial animations, and other modern avatar technology, including better expression. However, R6 was not referenced anywhere in the future plans.

Some players have noted that current dynamic heads don’t even work on R6 rigs. Facial animations completely fail, which implies that the new avatar system design is not being designed with R6 compatibility in mind.

It’s worth noting that there’s no official communication from Roblox that explicitly mentions the removal of R6. Players still have their reasons to fear this, since in earlier cases, a lack of compatibility was a precursor to long-term removal, even if there was no announcement. This has happened before with the removal of Guests in 2017, the closure of legacy Roblox forums, the removal of Rthro-style avatars, and more.

Roblox is also converting all the classic faces and heads to dynamic ones by Feb 2026, which only adds more worry.

While the lack of an opt-out option has raised concerns among players, Roblox has its reasons for prioritizing R15. Modern avatars support layered clothing, facial animations, and more expressive movement. Maintaining two avatar systems effectively doubles the workload for developers, while limiting the amount of visual upgrades they can push. Since R15 supports more cosmetics and customization, Roblox benefits by charging users for it.

The backlash and strong reaction from the community are mostly from nostalgia, and most classic Roblox games are designed around R6, with respect to movement speed, animation timing, etc. Older games may fundamentally break, or feel different and ‘forced’ with R15. Developers are worried that they may have to rework the entire games, or abandon them.

These worries come amid new announcements, such as Roblox scanning your avatar every time you change it.

While these signs point to Roblox heavily prioritizing R15 more in the future, we might not see a complete removal of R6. There is no official confirmation, and players await further clarification.
