Roblox has started sending emails to users with 2-Step Verification enabled, telling them to add multiple recovery options before March 2026 or face permanent lockout if they lose their primary 2SV method. A Reddit user shared the email they received, which kicked up a discussion about what this change actually means for account security.
The new policy requires two different verification methods on file to complete account recovery. Right now, if you lose access to your authenticator app or security key, you typically need just one verification method to regain access. But starting March, that won’t be enough anymore.
Players who only have an authenticator app set up need to act fast. Roblox offers three backup options: adding a phone number, setting up a passkey, or generating backup codes. The backup codes can be found in Settings under the Security tab, and each code works only once.
Phone numbers meet the two-method requirement because recovery needs both an email challenge and a phone challenge. Passkeys help you skip the 2SV challenge during login, but they still count as a recovery method. Backup codes let you complete the 2SV challenge even if you lose your primary method, though you can only see them once when generated.
The change comes at a time when Roblox is pushing several controversial updates. The platform announced the removal of classic 2D faces and heads just days ago, and today announced automatic avatar scanning for moderation alongside testing age group indicators in experience chat. Players aren’t thrilled about any of it.
On X, the Roblox community news account RTC posted about the email, where reactions were mixed. Some defended the stricter security as necessary for high-value accounts, while others complained about Roblox support failing to help them remove phone numbers from terminated accounts. One user mentioned their authentication codes stopped arriving entirely, and support ignored their ticket.
Without two distinct recovery methods, you might lose your account for good if something goes wrong. Roblox won’t help you get back in, which is a big shift from how things worked before. Players who’ve been on the platform since 2013 or earlier are understandably nervous about losing years of purchases and progress.
The Reddit thread shows users are more worried about account loss than appreciative of better security. Save those backup codes now if you haven’t already.
