Update 29/01/26 – 09:09 am (IST): NewPipe users have confirmed that the latest version of the app – v0.28.2 – has fixed the ‘content unavailable’ problem. For users who downloaded the app via F-Droid, you can follow these instructions to get the latest version:

If you’re using F-Droid, add the NewPipe repository to get quicker updates (0.28.2 was added today) or you’ll have to wait around 7 days before you get the update.

NewPipe users have been frustrated for the past few days as videos refuse to load, throwing a persistent “content unavailable” error across multiple versions of the app. The issue has affected many Android users who rely on the open-source YouTube client and is part of a bigger problem with YouTube. That said, even updating to the latest release didn’t resolve the problem. But there’s good news.

A Reddit user named abhi_1_ discovered that rolling back to version 0.27.6 gets NewPipe working again. The workaround, highlighted by u/neirein, has been confirmed by dozens of users on the r/NewPipe subreddit who were dealing with the same playback issues.

Before you try this fix, make sure to export your subscriptions and watch history from the app settings, because downgrading requires a full uninstall and reinstall.

You can grab version 0.27.6 directly from the official NewPipe GitHub releases page at github.com/TeamNewPipe/NewPipe/releases/tag/v0.27.6. Once you download the APK file, uninstall your current NewPipe version, install 0.27.6, and then import your previously exported data. Most users report that videos start playing immediately after the rollback.

There are some trade-offs with this temporary fix. Several users mentioned that version 0.27.6 caps video quality at 360p and doesn’t support audio downloads. For people who mostly listen to content in the background, this isn’t a dealbreaker.

If you need higher quality playback right now, you might want to wait for an official update from the NewPipe development team.

If rolling back doesn’t appeal to you, alternative apps might work. Users on Reddit suggested trying PipePipe X, which has been working without issues and can import your NewPipe subscription data. You can find it on GitHub at github.com/InfinityLoop1308/PipePipe-X/releases.

Some people also reported success with a debug version of NewPipe mentioned in GitHub issue #13082, though availability and stability may vary.

YouTube has been tightening restrictions on third-party clients recently, which often breaks apps like NewPipe until developers can push out workarounds. The NewPipe team typically responds quickly to these disruptions, so a proper fix should arrive soon. Until then, version 0.27.6 seems to be your best bet for getting back to uninterrupted video playback.
