Google’s Pixel Weather app has quietly rolled out a long-awaited feature. Users can now choose their preferred weather units without needing to change their phone’s language settings. This update ends years of frustration for those who wanted metric or imperial measurements without altering their device’s regional preferences.

Earlier, the app relied on the phone’s language to determine units. For example, selecting “English (US)” forced Fahrenheit and miles, while “English (UK)” switched to Celsius and kilometers. What’s worse is that even this functionality was broken for a while. But luckily, Pixel Weather users will no longer have to deal with the half-baked experience.

Now, a new “Weather units” section in the app settings lets users pick options like millimeters for rain, centimeters for snow, kilometers per hour for wind speed, and hectopascals for pressure. Regional defaults remain, but the new settings give flexibility. You can also change the temperature units from a dedicated ‘Temperature’ settings page.

The update arrived in version 1.0.20250106.720365328.release of the Google Weather app, spotted by Reddit user 11LyRa in the r/GooglePixel community. I sideloaded the APK file via APKMirror to test it out for myself. Here are the screenshots for reference:

The change sparked relief and humor in the Pixel community. “Finally!” wrote one Redditor, while another jokingly said, “Sad for this sub since this means 60% fewer posts per week.” For years, complaints about the missing unit toggle dominated forums, with many calling it a baffling oversight for a company like Google.

But the good news doesn’t end there. A few days ago we reported that the Pixel Weather app is missing a bunch of settings. Well, it seems that this new update has brought all of them back, including Immersive weather vibrations.

The update seems to be rolling out gradually through the Google Play Store. Impatient users can sideload the APK from trusted sources, though Google hasn’t officially announced the feature. It’s unclear why the option took so long to arrive, but I’m sure many Pixel users are glad it’s finally here.
