Google has officially announced an extension of operating system (OS) support for its Pixel 6 series, Pixel 7 series, and Pixel Fold. The tech giant updated its support page to confirm that these devices will now receive five years of updates, encompassing both OS and security patches, starting from their original launch dates.

This move ensures that Pixel 6 devices, which debuted in late 2021, will remain current through Android 16 and Android 17. Meanwhile, the Pixel 7 series and the Pixel Fold, launched more recently, will see updates through Android 17 and Android 18. This includes devices in the A series.

While this announcement enhances the longevity of the Pixel 6, 7 and Fold devices, it does not exceed current industry standards, as Google’s newer Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series have already set the bar higher. These latest models, alongside Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series, are guaranteed seven years of OS updates and security patches, an unprecedented commitment in the Android ecosystem.

Previously, Google had guaranteed only three OS updates and five years of security updates for the Pixel 6, 7, and Fold. This extension brings these devices in line with Google’s updated approach to software longevity, although they still fall short of the seven-year support policy introduced with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series.

As competition in the smartphone market intensifies, this decision could solidify Google’s reputation as a leader in providing long-term software support. With this update, Pixel 6, 7, and Fold users can enjoy peace of mind knowing their devices will stay updated and secure well into the future.

The Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel Fold as well as the newer Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 are currently receiving the latest December update that brings the first Pixel Feature Drop based on Android 15.
