Google has officially announced its Pixel 9 series, showcasing a range of cool new AI features that actually seem useful. The new lineup, consisting of the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL, is powered by Google’s latest Tensor G4 chip, designed in collaboration with Google DeepMind to run advanced AI models directly on the device.

At the heart of the Pixel 9’s AI capabilities is Gemini Nano, a multimodal AI system that we’ve seen on the Pixel 8 series too. This enables a more natural and intuitive interaction between users and their devices. As leaked earlier, Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL owners will receive a complimentary one-year subscription to Gemini Advanced. This subscription includes access to Gemini Live, a new conversational AI assistant that can engage in free-flowing dialogue on a wide range of topics.

One of the most intriguing new features is Pixel Studio, an on-device image generator that allows users to create custom images from scratch using text prompts. This creative tool combines an on-device diffusion model with Google’s cloud-based Imagen 3 text-to-image model. From what I see, the output seems quite decent and on power with existing AI tools like Microsoft’s Designer AI.

The Pixel 9 series also introduces Pixel Screenshots, an intelligent organization tool that automatically analyzes and categorizes screenshots, making them easily searchable. This feature addresses the common problem of forgetting about or losing track of important information captured in screenshots.

Google has also reimagined the weather app experience on the Pixel 9, as seen in a leak a week ago. Powered by Gemini Nano, the app now generates custom AI weather reports, providing users with more personalized and context-aware forecasts.

Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the AI-enhanced camera features. The new “Add Me” function solves the age-old problem of the photographer being left out of group photos, intelligently inserting the picture-taker into the shot. Magic Editor in Google Photos has been expanded with new capabilities, including an auto-frame feature for improved composition and the ability to reimagine photos through text prompts.

For video, the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL boast improved Video Boost processing, which now handles Night Sight Videos twice as fast. These models also offer high-resolution zoom video recording up to 20x using the 48MP 5x telephoto lens and Super Res Zoom technology.

AI enhancements extend to phone calls as well. The Clear Calling feature has been further refined to improve audio quality, while the new Call Notes function provides users with an AI-generated summary and full transcript of their conversations shortly after hanging up. Importantly, Call Notes operates entirely on-device to ensure privacy, with all parties notified when the feature is active.

That said, will these new AI features convince you to upgrade to the Google Pixel 9 series? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. For those interested, you can watch this video from CNET that highlights the live demo’s of some of the new AI features at the launch event.
